Position Summary

The Senior Cost Accountant plays a key role in analyzing, reporting, and controlling costs to support strategic financial decisions. This role is responsible for maintaining accurate cost records, developing cost standards, analyzing production variances, and partnering with operations and finance teams to improve profitability and operational efficiency. The Senior Cost Accountant also supports month‑end close, budgeting, and process improvement initiatives.


Key Responsibilities

Cost Accounting & Inventory Management

  • Maintain and monitor standard costs, bills of materials (BOMs), routings, and overhead rates.
  • Perform cost roll‑ups, update standard costs annually or as needed, and analyze cost changes.
  • Ensure accurate inventory valuation for raw materials, WIP, and finished goods.
  • Monitor and reconcile inventory transactions, cycle counts, and physical inventory adjustments.

Variance & Margin Analysis

  • Analyze purchase price variances, labor and overhead variances, scrap, yield, and production efficiency.
  • Investigate root causes of variances and partner with operations to drive improvements.
  • Prepare margin analyses by product, customer, and business segment.
  • Identify cost‑saving opportunities and present insights to leadership.

Financial Support & Reporting

  • Support month‑end close activities, including journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations.
  • Prepare cost and inventory‑related financial reports and dashboards.
  • Assist with budgeting and forecasting, especially cost modeling and manufacturing inputs.
  • Provide ad hoc financial and operational analysis to support business decisions.

Cross‑Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with operations, supply chain, procurement, and engineering to ensure cost accuracy.
  • Partner on new product development to create and evaluate cost estimates.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement projects impacting costing, inventory, and reporting processes.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or CMA a plus).
  • 3–5+ years of experience in cost accounting, preferably in manufacturing or distribution.
  • Strong understanding of standard costing and inventory accounting.

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency with ERP systems (SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, Infor, etc.).
  • Strong Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups, modeling).
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools such as Power BI or Tableau (preferred).
Compensation: $95,000-105,000 + bonus
